In a whirlwind few years Tyson Priest and his friends and family moved here and founded theRiver church here in Lapel.
This week sees the one year anniversary of theRiver using the Lapel Elementary School as its home base for Sunday service.
In that time Tyson tells us the amount of people attending service has grown with people attending from Lapel but also from outlying towns and communities including Anderson, Alexandria, Frankton, Pendleton and Fishers as well as numerous others.
Tyson attributes this success in part to the dedicated members and family that make up theRiver but also to the fact that for a long time a number of people have become disillusioned with the way Churches are run or perceived publically with theRiver being a fresh and new take on worshiping God and Christian faith.
Tyson believes the use of the Elementary School has been instrumental in the success of the church and says "Access to the school has provided a great basis for the church. Many people enjoy it because it's not a "traditional church" atmosphere. FLCS is second to none and has been wonderful to work with. We really appreciate them."
In the future theRiver has hopes of constructing its own Church building but this is not for many years and the Lapel Elementary School seems to be a perfect fit for the church as it continues to grow.
You may have noticed that theRiver has been heavily involved in community events and supporting other organizations in Lapel, who can miss the bright blue T-shirts and the big banner at many of the Town events.
Tyson says "Helping the community is at the heart of who we are. We intend to do another Easter Egg drop next spring and maybe sometime even an adult prom for the Lapel community. Although that idea (adult prom) is still in air. We'll continue to be a presence at the Village Fair and other community events.
We've also provided snack for teachers, helped with rebuilding the Optimist Club, helped LCA put Christmas lights on the street lights, and several other things this past year.
The reason we do all these things is because, Jesus our model, was continually helping and giving to people."
For being the new "Church" on the block theRiver has become an integral part of many lives in Lapel and long may it continue.
