Public Meeting Buoys Optimism for a New Optimist Club

A few short hours ago the Lapel Optimist Club held a Public Meeting at the Eagles to discuss ideas for getting the Optimist Club back on its feet.

Chad Pilkington read out the official police statement concerning the fire being recognized as an accident to make sure that everyone who was present understood that any rumors about the fire being malicious or intentionally started were unsubstantiated.

Pilkington also explained that they figure they will need $200 per child to replace the equipment they lost. $200 may not sound like a lot but when you have to replace 240 at once the figure of $48,000 sure does!

Pilkington then opened the floor to comments and suggestions.

Captain Mike Barnes of the Lapel Police Department explained that he was trying to organize a Police and Fire Department Touch / Flag Football game to be held at the Lapel High School. Involving Departmenrts from neighboring communities as well as Lapel with adults being charged an entry fee to watch. Barnes also commented that they were trying to get Colts players involved which would certainly bolster this event and make for a great evening for the Optimist Club, the people involved and the community at large.

We also heard from Optimist Club members and leaders from other communities who pledged support as well as donations and used equipment.

Various other organizations such as Charlie`s Fund, the VFW in Noblesville as well as the Lapel High School pledged their support.

There were also numerous suggestions from members of the community such as:

  • 5k Run/Walk
  • Silent Auctions
  • Golf Cart Poker Run
  • Cornhole Tournament
  • Motorcycle Run
  • Beef and Chicken Noodle Dinner
  • Concert
  • etc...

Principal Granger of the High School offered to allow the use of the High School for any events that needed it to help raise funds for the Optimist Club.

There were 40 or more people at this event and it is clear to see that the community and all those present are deeply motivated to helping this fine organization rebuilt and come back better than ever.
