Town Given Approval to Use River Boat Money for Fifth Police Officer

LAPEL, IN - Town attorney Bill Byer and Council President Michael Cates confirmed that the Town is able to use river boat and other gambling related monies it receives (around $7,000 per month) to fund the Fifth Full Time Police Officer Position.

These funds will be used to cover a fifth full time officer until the end of the year through an appropriation from the river boat fund.

After 2016 the fifth officer will be budgeted into the Town budget.

The department was recently strained due to vacations and injuries that effectively halved the Lapel Police Departments available full time officers. While public safety was never in danger it highlighted the need to have an additional officer AND accelerated existing plans to fill that spot.
