LAPEL, IN - Lapel Stony Creek Township Fire Department one of three local causes in running for OHOP Grant in 2016.

Open Hearts, Open Purses (OHOP) is the South Madison Community Foundation’s Women’s Giving Circle. In OHOP, 100 women each contribute $100 and then vote for one community organization to receive their pooled $10,000 grant.  In existence since 2010, OHOP has invested nearly $80,000 in local projects to date.

On June 9, members will gather to determine the recipient of their 2016 grant.  A grant committee made up of eight OHOP members has put in hours of review and deliberation to winnow the field of twelve applicants vying for the $10,000 OHOP grant to just three, who will present their proposals to members on June 9.   The three finalists are:

The Lapel Stony Creek Township Fire Territory
The 35 member force responded to over 450 emergency calls during 2015, covering over 100 square miles of largely rural territory. The agency is requesting equipment to decrease their response time and administer more immediate aid. Specifically, the request is for a snow plow attachment and four AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators)- the department will share their older model AEDs with the Lapel Police Department so either agency will be able to administer rapid aid when arriving to a citizen in need.

Safe Families for Children
Safe Families prevents child abuse and neglect by providing safe, temporary homes for children from families in crisis. Beyond home stays, Safe families support and stabilize families in crisis by providing mentoring and referrals. With the OHOP grant, Safe Families aims to increase its network of host families as well as strengthening its referral network for families in need.

Markleville Park Board
The Park Board aims to impact c ommunity development through amenities selected to encourage people of all ages and abilities to recreate together. Improving physical and cognitive health and drawing connections between people will be accomplished through the addition of a Frisbee golf course, an RC (radio controlled device) track and viewing stand, benches, and a climber.

By underwriting the cost of the annual gathering where members cast their votes, the generosity of sponsors allows each member’s entire $100 contribution to be awarded in grant funding. Sponsors of the 2016 OHOP Award night are: Citizens State Bank, First Merchants Bank and Trust, Jennifer A. Neise, DDS, Pendleton Kiwanis Club, and Pendleton Town Court
