The Lapel Stony Creek Fire Territory took delivery of the Stryker Cot and Lift system several weeks ago. It is hoped that this system will reduce strain on the volunteer fire fighters as well as alleviate potential problems with injuries caused in the transportation of a patient via the old manual system.
This Power Cot operates both through electronic and hydraulic means and reduces the risk of injury to those being transferred and to the EMT's that are doing the transferring.
The legs can be raised or lowered at the push of a button as needed, so if you still need to manually carry an individual it is possible to do so.
This system stops what are called HOT DROP incidents; this is when the legs and wheels of the cot are allowed to drop causing a loud noise and potentially causing damage to the cot. This term can also be used to describe the same scenario when the cot is loaded with a patient and it could cause serious injury to the patient if it happens.
With the Power Cot the legs drop in a timely manner but in a controlled fashion preventing a heavy jarring impact and therefore a potential law suit or added insurance bill!
Lapel is one of only a handful of fire departments in this part of Indiana to use this system and quite proud to be leading the way.
